Spunk: Three Tales By Zora Neale Hurston
The blissfully tuneful, versatile voice and stylings of Kim Nalley provide perfect accompaniment for the rich verbal music in George C. Wolfe’s comic-poignant adaptation of three stories by Hurston, a vignette of competing Harlem street hustlers sandwiched between two sly, resonant tales of rocky marriages in rural Florida. Darryl V. Jones’ uneven two-hour staging doesn’t attain the exhilarating riches of Wolfe’s original, but it’s still an evocative musical, comic and affecting entertainment.
